Behavioral health, psychiatry, Priest River Clinic

Michael Underhill, PMHNP, brings a unique blend of professional experience, lifelong learning, and a deep commitment to service to his work in healthcare. After nearly four decades as an attorney in Washington, D.C., including serving as a partner at three law firms, Michael transitioned to nursing to pursue his passion for helping individuals improve their health and well-being. His legal career focused primarily on patent infringement litigation, intellectual property disputes, and labor and employment law.

Michael earned a Master of Science in Nursing with a Family Nurse Practitioner focus from Duke University and is currently completing a postgraduate certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practice at Duke University, with expected completion in May 2026. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from George Mason University, a Juris Doctor from Duke University, and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University.

Michael’s approach to patient care centers on collaboration, compassion, and respect. He believes in working alongside patients to clarify their goals and chart a practical path forward while recognizing the inherent dignity and worth of every individual. His personal philosophy is reflected in the belief that, “Lifelong learning keeps us growing, and service keeps us grounded.”

Motivated by a belief that many rural communities are underserved, Michael is dedicated to expanding access to high-quality behavioral health care and supporting patients on their journey toward improved mental wellness.

Outside of work, Michael enjoys reading—especially history—target shooting, and spending time outdoors.
